Most privilege surprises arrive after someone “just needed temporary access.” By the time your financial auditing app shows a weekly digest, the temporary grant has either vanished or become folklore.
Start with a delta, not a census
Full role inventories feel thorough and stall everyone. Instead, capture a signed snapshot of grants at the start of a release train, then compare after each promote. The delta becomes the review queue — small enough to finish before the freeze.
Name the humans behind service accounts
Database compliance checks fail when service accounts float without owners. Require a named steward in the same ticket that creates the grant. If your auditing tool only stores the account string, add a linked field for steward email and keep it mandatory.
Rehearse the awkward conversation
When a grant cannot be justified, write the finding in plain language before escalation. Our Privilege Drift Clinics practice that wording so auditors and DBAs are not inventing tone under deadline pressure.
